Last November there was a world-wide outcry when a trove of emails were released suggesting some of the world’s leading climate scientists engaged in professional misconduct, data manipulation and jiggering of both the scientific literature and climatic data to paint what scientist Keith Briffa called “a nice, tidy story” of climate history. The scandal became known as Climategate.

Just three years ago the politics of global warming was enjoying its golden moment. The release in 2006 of Al Gore’s Oscar-winning film, An Inconvenient Truth, had riveted global audiences with its predictions of New York and Miami under 20 feet of water. Within 12 months, leading politicians with real power were on board. Germany’s Angela Merkel, dubbed the “climate chancellor” by her country’s press, arranged a Greenland photo op with a melting iceberg and promised to cut Europe’s emissions by 20 percent by 2020.

Is Global Warming Still a Serious Threat?

Climate change scientists have been cleared of any wrong-doing after a seven month investigation unveiled that professor Phil Jones did not fudge data to try to silence skeptics. Muir Russell, who led the investigation, found that scientists at the climatic research unit at the University of East Anglia did not do anything to change or alter critical data and they still produced work in a “rigorous and honest” way. ClimateGate Scandal

Britain’s Climate Research Unit, University of East Anglia, suffered a data breach in recent days when a hacker apparently broke into their system and made away with thousands of emails and documents. Obama to attend beginning of U.N. climate meeting

U.S. President Barack Obama will go to Copenhagen for a U.N. climate change meeting on December 9, hoping to add momentum to an international process despite slow progress on a domestic bill to cut carbon emissions.

Climate Change Moving in the Senate

On Thursday, November 5th, the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee approved a climate change bill crafted by Senators Barbara Boxer and John Kerry. Republicans boycotted the committee and did not participate in the vote. However, the bill is already being upstaged by a more conservative alternative coordinated by Mr. Kerry; Sen. Joe Lieberman, Connecticut independent; and Sen. Lindsey Graham, South Carolina Republican.

The Belief in Global Warming is Trending Down

CO2 and Congress

Leighton Steward, a scientist who used to back the man-made global warming theory is on Capitol Hill this week to convince lawmakers that global warming is more related to solar activity and that cutting CO2 levels in our atmosphere could actually have a negative effect on our planet. European Union Considers Carbon Tax

European Union Finance ministers met on Friday, October 2nd, to discuss implementing carbon taxes in order to combat climate change.  The carbon tax would most likely be applied to transport, agriculture, forestry, households along with other sectors that were unnamed.
